Case Log Requirements for ECAR Residents
These logs are essential for monitoring the Resident’s clinical exposure and professional development throughout their training and are required for eligibility to sit the ECAR examination.
1. Resident Case Diary
Purpose

To document all clinical cases the Resident handles during the programme.

Demonstrates the breadth and depth of experience in animal reproduction.
Content Requirements
Each case entry must include:

Date
-
Animal/Herd ID
-
Species, breed, gender, age
-
Primary reproductive problems/Reason for herd visit

Diagnosis
-
Outcome
-
Level of Resident involvement/responsibility
Scope
-
Must reflect training in the chosen subspeciality (e.g., small animals, equine, ruminants, porcine or biotechnology).

Some exposure to other species groups, not part of the resident sub-specialty is expected.
2. Activity Diary
Purpose
To log non-clinical training activities, including educational and scientific involvement.
Content Requirements
Should include:

Dates and type of clinical rotations or service.
-
Externships or off-site training.
-
Scientific meetings attended.
-
Presentations delivered.
-
Courses or seminars attended.
-
Any other relevant academic or research activity (excluding publications).
3. Supervisor Verification

The Resident’s Supervisor must regularly review the case and activity diaries.

Supervisor must submit an annual progress report to the Education and Residency Committee (ERC) by March 31st each year.

Late submissions (within 30 days) incur extra fees; submissions more than 30 days late may lead to suspension of the training programme
4. Submission and Use in Examination Process

Final versions of both diaries must be submitted when applying for the ECAR exam (by May 15 of the exam year).

Diaries are used by the ERC to:

Verify eligibility.

Assess the scope and quality of training.
-
Approve the Resident’s entry to the examination.
